A6 Autostrada La Verdemare Turin-Savona

The A6 Turin-Savona Motorway, also known as La Verdemare Motorway, is a highway approximately 125 km long that connects the Piedmont capital to the Ligurian Riviera.

The artery was built between 1960 and 1972 and crosses the Piedmont and Liguria regions. In the mountainous section between Savona and Ceva, the two directions of travel are independent, making one 5 km longer than the other.

A peculiarity of this motorway is that it was a single carriageway for a long time, an aspect that caused numerous accidents. The doubling of the carriageway took 28 years to complete, from 1973 to 2001.

The route of the A6 corresponds to the European road E717 Turin-Savona.

History

The birth of the A6 was planned in the 1950s, during the full Italian economic boom or miracle, thanks to the initiative of FIAT which promoted the subsidiary company SPASIS (Società per azioni sviluppo iniziative stradali) joined by local institutions and Turin businesses.

The inauguration of the first section Savona-Ceva took place on January 27, 1960, while the subsequent sections were progressively completed by 1972. The mountainous nature of the territory necessitated a high number of viaducts and tunnels, and the result was also a winding route. On July 26, 1972, the A6 was completed with the Monaclieri overpass, today part of the A55 Turin Ring Road.

Since the route had a single carriageway, the inadequacy of the infrastructure and the high number of accidents led to a doubling plan. Started in 1973, it was only completed in 2001.

The name Autostrada La Verdemare - as it represents a connection between mountain forests and the coast - was introduced on this occasion, trying to overcome the sad nickname of "highway of death" by which it was commonly known.

Features

Managed by Autostrada dei Fiori, the same concessionaire of the A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia, the A6 Turin-Savona Highway is 125 kilometers long in one direction and 130 in the other. The route includes 210 viaducts and 49 tunnels.

In addition to connecting Turin and Savona, it serves various locations in Piedmont and Liguria including Carmagnola, Fossano, Mondovì, Ceva, Carcare.

The speed limit on the highway is 130 km/h. Due to the dangerous nature of the route, in some sections it is reduced to 90 or 70 km/h. Further restrictions may be added in case of adverse weather conditions.

Newly licensed drivers, meaning motorists who have obtained their A or B license less than three years ago, must respect the limit of 100 km/h under normal conditions and other temporary or structural limitations introduced.

How much does the toll cost on the A6?

The A6 Turin-Savona Highway operates on a closed toll system, where drivers must collect a ticket at the entrance toll booth and pay for it when exiting. If equipped with a Telepass electronic toll device, the process happens automatically by driving through the designated lanes marked with yellow symbols. The toll amount is directly proportional to the distance traveled, the vehicle class coefficient, and the per-kilometer rate (which varies from highway to highway and is set by the concessionary company).

The cost of traveling the entire A6 route from the Turin South barrier to the Altare toll booth is €11.60 for cars and motorcycles (Class A) and €11.90 for trucks, vans, and buses (Class B).
