History

The birth of the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo Highway dates back to the years following the 1968 Belice earthquake. Construction began in 1971 with the first section from Palermo to the airport, while from Mazara del Vallo work started on the section up to the current Gallitello junction.

In 1975, the A29 was extended to Alcamo. Between 1979 and 1980, the route between Dattilo-Paceco and Trapani airport was completed, which had not been included in the initial lot of the Trapani branch.

In the 1980s, the highway was extended from the Tommaso Natale district to connect it to the Palermo ring road, opening the Tommaso Natale-Mondello junction at the location of the previous highway connection.

Features

Completely managed by ANAS and free of charge, the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo Highway is 114.8 kilometers long, characterized by various viaducts and tunnels.

This is a fundamental infrastructure for western Sicily because it connects the capital with the centers of the Trapani area and with the Trapani-Birgi airport.

At the Capaci junction, two obelisks (one for each direction of travel) have been erected in memory of Judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and the escort agents killed in the attack of May 23, 1992.

The speed limit on the highway is 130 km/h. In case of adverse weather conditions, it can be reduced to 110 km/h or lower speeds. Newly licensed drivers, meaning motorists who have obtained their A or B license less than three years ago, must respect the 100 km/h limit.
